Summer Camping Essentials for Minnesota Adventures
There’s nothing quite like camping in Minnesota during the summer. Whether you’re planning a weekend up north or a quick overnight close to home, getting outside is one of the best ways to reset. But a great camping trip starts with packing smart—and that’s where we come in.
Here are our top must-haves for summer camping, plus a few of our favorite spots near the Twin Cities if you want to get out there without driving hours.
🏕️ Camping Gear We Always Bring:
1. Reliable Tent
You don’t need a fancy setup, but a good tent makes all the difference—especially when the weather turns.
2. Sleeping Bag + Pad Combo
A warm, compact sleeping bag plus an insulated pad means actual sleep, not just tossing and turning on the ground.
👉 Our favorite 3-season sleeping bag
👉 And this foam pad is a game-changer
3. Portable Camp Stove
You can do a lot over a fire, but a small camp stove makes coffee and breakfast easy—especially on rainy mornings.
👉 We use this lightweight camp stove
4. Rechargeable Lantern or Headlamp
Don’t get caught using your phone flashlight.
👉 This lantern is super bright and USB rechargeable
👉 We also keep a few of these headlamps in our packs
5. Bug Protection
Minnesota mosquitoes don’t mess around.
👉 This natural bug spray works and smells great
👉 And this portable bug zapper is worth every penny
6. Cooler with Good Ice Retention
Even on short trips, keeping your food safe and fresh is essential.
👉 We love this sturdy, wheeled cooler
7. Folding Camp Chairs
Lightweight, comfy, and great for campfires or lake views.
👉 These fold up small but are super sturdy
📍 Local Spots to Camp Without a Long Drive
Don’t want to head all the way up north? These are two favorite spots within reach of the Twin Cities:
Fish Lake Acres Campground (Prior Lake, MN)
Tucked into a quiet area with lake access and roomy sites. A great intro spot for new campers or families with young kids.
Lebanon Hills Regional Park (Apple Valley, MN)
You’d never know you were near the city. Beautiful trails, well-kept campsites, and canoe/kayak rentals on Schulze Lake.
🧭 Final Tip
Even if you’re just going for one night, a little planning can make it feel like a real adventure. Pack light but smart, and always check the forecast (and your gear!) before you head out.
